Provo to Laramie Options

Looks like when I get to Heber City I can go north and east picking up I80 all the way. Or, head south and east on US40 probably heading north at Craig to pick up I80.

I like to stay off the interstates if there is a reasonable alternative - I'm showing the US40 option is only about 80 miles farther, and I'd be able to check out Dinosaur National Monument.

Is US40 a pretty fair road without being infested with truck traffic? (I know about I80 but the interstate does have the advantage of having another lane to share with them). A sampling of satellite shots on US40 shows what looks like a pretty typical 2(+ in places) lane US highway. But, of course that can't tell you about the surface or what its like to drive it with an RV.

  • edit- your original question. good 2 lane all weather road.

the father wests you go on 40 the more the traffic thins out. much more to see on 40 and east than 80.

more around roosevelt and vernal local traffic.. frack sand truck run between vernal and crag but not heavy traffic. you might see 3 or 4

not a fast as 80 but quiet scenic drive most of the way.

another rout from craig and better than going north to 80 at craig.

stay on 40 through steamboat and rabbit ears pass. on the east side of rabbit ears take 14 to walden-125 to 127 turns to wyo230 at state line- woods landing then 27 mi to Laramie

when daughter was in collage we made several trips to laramie and this is our preferred rout.

less traffic and quicker than going through grandby.

over nighting possible any where, and especially form vernal on.
  • US 40 east bound is an easy drive. Good pavement - at least a coule of years ago. All the way to Granby CO- then north on 125 to 127 CO , becomes WY 230, to Laramie!! A great route IMHO!!
  • I avoid Interstates as much as possible........secondary/backroads for us.

Provo to Heber.......beautiful drive thru Provo Canyon. Check out Bridal Veil Falls.

Coming out of Heber Valley heading towards Duchesne is Strawberry Reservoir.

East of Vernal........Jensen UT take hwy 149 north to Dinosaur Quarry/Visitor Center. Well worth the trip.

Then onto Craig....north roughly 90 miles to I-80
