Question about taking pets into Ontario

We are planning a trip to Niagara Falls in August via crossing into Canada near Detroit. Since we planned this trip (and got Campground Reservations), we have acquired two rescue dogs who now travel with us. Is there anything special we need to take with us in order for our pets to accompany us?

  • I have crossed many times into Ontario with my Collies and I always had the rabies certificate. Most times they didn't even ask for that. Make sure if taking dog food that it's in the original bag.
  • We crossed back into Canada two days ago and were asked for valid rabies certificates only.

  • Going either way border guards can confiscate pet food. So, keep your ears to the ground for things like 'bird flu in....' If something like that is going on, they will ask for your dog food.

I make sure to keep my dogs on a reputable dog food that you can find in just about every grocery or convenience store on either side of the border. I have been ask for that pet food.

I have also had to pass over the paper work I have for my pets. Rarely, but it has happened.

  • If these dogs are pit bulls, you have to leave them at home. Ontario ban pit bulls.
To cross the border, you have to have valid rabies certificate from a vet. If your dog doesn't look healthy, they can demand a letter from your vet declaring good health. I have taken my late dog crossing the border numerous times but have never been asked for these document. BTW, keep your pet food in original packaging with content label. Check border website for temporary restriction on chicken or beef etc. if there's outbreak of chicken flu or mad cow decease.
  • Contact the customs on both sides of the boarder, in line or by phone for a definite answer.
