Been many years since I've had to travel rt95 in NY. Heading from Western NJ (on border of PA) to Mystic. Leaving mid day on a Thursday, returning mid day on a Monday. What would be the best route? ...

I-95 through CT is miserable and we avoid it at all costs. They have been working on the 91/95 interchange for 20 years and it's still not done. I-95 in CT is mostly 2 lanes and when an 18 wheeler gets into the passing lane it's like a rolling road block.
This will sound nuts, but I can tell you mid-day weekday, this route will save you time and aggravation.
TZ bridge to I-684 to I-84 to I-691/CT66 to Middletown to CT9 south to Old Lyme and re-connect to I-95.
