Ready, set, go!

We drove from California to Panama in 2010. Caribbean Honduras was one of our favorite places. Why would you not go there?

I have been to Honduras and would go again. That said - in a thread a month or so ago there was talk of safety in Mexico. I posted a link to a list from the UN that ranked Honduras the number one murder rate in the world - with 3 other central America countries in the top ten.

I am not saying don't go to Honduras or anywhere else - just posting some facts. We drove all over Honduras and flew out to Roatan for SCUBA diving. No problems. But that was years ago.

We, too like Honduras. If you skip that, you'll miss Copan.

We were just up to Michoacán for a week, despite dire warnings. There were serious problems in Apatzingan, but we took another route and had zero problems. RYV

Honduras is safe. The people that wrote those statistics probably have never left the state they were born in. Big cities anywhere are unsafe. Big cities at night are like unsafe on steroids.

First trip update: we crossed the border at Laredo, TX on Thursday morning. We drove to and slept in Saltillo, at hotel Imperial together with a German couple in an unimog and two Canadian truck campers.
Today Friday we're spending the night in Matehuala; along highway 57 on the way south to Mexico City.

Nice weather here with lots of palm trees. So far good roads. Nice mountainous scenery once you approach Monterrey from the north.

Now that I'm sitting here typing this; at Hotel Las Palmas in Matehuala; I see the German Unimog pulling into the campground :-)

Tomorrow we're headed further south to San Luis Potosi.

Prices are pretty high so far: $35 at Hotel Imperial in Saltillo and $28 at hotel Las Palmas in Matehuala.

So a 2008 Dodge diesel. Will be curious to hear of any diesel problems. We hope to make the same trip next winter.

Update: We left Matehuala this morning and ended up (rather unexpectedly) in the mountain town of San Miguel de Allende.

Very nice: 15th century colonial town with cobblestone streets and old plazas with churches. We're staying at the RV park in the old downtown. (San Miguel RV Park)
