Redding CA to Susanville CA
Leaving Redding Friday to Susanville to Reno (not towing). Would it be best to take 44 out of Redding to Susanville or... Go South on I-5 and pick up Highway 36 at Red Bluff over to Susanville? ...

44 to 89 to 36 is a good route, just remember there is some open range area and occasionally can see a cow on the roadway. Probably the way I would go from Redding if weather is not bad.
36 is not bad as long as you are in a car. Not my favorite in bad weather. If weather is good it is not bad but the road is a little windier.
70 through Feather River Canyon is a favorite of mine. Would definitely go that route if weather gets really bad.
As coolbreeze01 points out just don't be in a hurry and watch for ice.
