Reno, NV to Promontory, UT

Howdy - looking for some guidance... Good Sam's new on-line trip planning software has me headed East on I-80 to Oasis, UT, then northeast on NV 233, which apparently becomes UT 30 up to I-84 north of Promontory, UT (want to get to the "Golden Spike" location...). Just wondering, since I see a couple mountain ranges and it mentions Park Valley, if this route is a mountain climb (yea, I'm just in a 'B', but still not looking to overwork it...). My other option, which would add about 75 miles, is to stay on I-80 to Salt Lake City, then go north to Promontory from there... Any input appreciated! ST
  • There is also a nice backrooad to City of Rocks if you turn north at the Nv/Ut border
  • It's a good road. Don't do it in the dark though, lots of open range with cows on the road.

Fuel up in Wells, there is no fuel available untill you get to Snowville.

Stop in Montello and have a cowboy burger at the cowboy bar.

Get off I84 at the Howell exit, highway 83. Highway 83 passes the rocket display at ATK.

    Gary
  • Just west of Oasis is Pequap? pass, between wells and Oasis. Its a bit of a climb but short, should be no problem.
  • Awesome input, folks! Thanks for the pic, too! Sounds like a viable route to take, as long as it's not dangerously hot next month! ST

  • Here's a pic of the country about 15 miles North of I-80 on 33.
It gets a little more desert like and windy further up.

Oasis is still in Nevada, but the directions look good. I've never been on that particular road, but it looks like a fun journey. If you go to Google street view you can see the actual road from street level. I just looked at it in a couple of spots and it looks like it covers a whole lot of flat land in the middle of no where. My kind of road to drive on.

Just as a note, it's a few miles further, but you could stay on I-80 and just go through Salt Lake. I'd only do that if you don't like those back roads, but staying on 80 also takes you by the Bonneville Salt Flats if you like that kind of thing.
  • NV33 is a pretty desolate road.
It can get hot over that way.
There will be no climbing and no gas stops from Oasis to Utah 30 and 42 intersection.

I like driving up the West side of the lake.

If you don't mind lonely roads it's a good one!

Nevada is basin and range north-south, it is not flat. IR-80 goes generally east- west. So, yes even on IR-80 there will be some climbing over passes. You should have no issues getting from Reno to Promontory point with a B.
