Reno To Winchester Bay

We are in Reno now, leaving this AM. We were planning going 395 to Klamath Falls, boondock for the night, then head N on 97 to 138, across to 5.

With the current weather, would it be better to go 80 over to the 5? The winter advisory for the Klamath Falls area ends this am at 9 or so. We weren't planning on being there till about 4 this evening.

This is a 2 day run, and are not in a hurry. Just don't want to get stuck, but really don't want to go the 5 the whole way due to lack of scenery compared to our initial route.

If we do go Klamath to 97, to 138, is 138 ok for a 35' fifth wheel?

Local knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If your going over 58, be sure to stop near the top and take the short hike to the falls. Are you stopping at Winchester bay RV at Salmon harbor? Beautiful park and scenery. Be sure to take in the light house, and the dunes. There is or used to be a pretty good sea food restraunt across the marina, maybe 1/2 mile drive from the park. Small but good food.

Yes, we are staying at Winchester Bay RV Resort. Looks gorgeous, and the lady on the phone said we could pretty much have our pick of spots when we get there tomorrow.
Will probably stay there and check out the area until our reservation at Bullards Beach.
Just landed in Klamath Falls @ the Casino boondocking for the night.
We saw an eagle!! Our first one ever, not on TV!
What a gorgeous drive. 6 hours of heaven. It's actually warmer here now than Sparks Marina was. Sun is shining, about 55 degrees. Life is so good!
Looking forward to doing some clamming and crabbing over the next few weeks, or months.
    Thanks all. Everyone travel safe
  • Weather here in Klamath is clearing up and warming up. ODOT is very good at cleaning up the passes so shouldnt be any problems. Enjoy the trip.

  • We just had a cold front come through and had snow on most passes with some ice so leave late morning and it should be OK but I would check the road cams. the weather is going to be better on Thursday & Friday. When you get to Klamath Falls don't take Hwy 66 it's not a RV friendly road if you are not used to mountain driving.
  • Thanks! We decided we are going to go our original route 395 N and boonie in Klamath Falls for the night.

We are doing this to see the beautiful country the US has to offer, so we want to stay off major highways as much as possible. Looks too beautiful to just pass by.

Donn, your route looks gorgeous, so we will probably go that way tomorrow.
  • Best is going to be 97 north, 58 west. At Eugene you have two choices, 126 west to Florence and 101 south or I5 south to 99/38 to Reedsport. Either route will be an easy drive. I preferr 99/38 as it does follow the Umpqua river most of the way, and you can stop at the elk viewing area just east of Reedsport.
