Request Dallas info: US75, I-45; or I-635; or avoid city?

Leaving Fayeteville, Ark., southbound for Ennis, Tx, plan to stop short of Red River. Should hit Dallas around noon, Friday. Worried about possible construction delay on I-635 in northeast Dallas, or possible traffic jam in central Dallas.

Pulling 32-ft. fifth wheel. Trying to decide whether to swing around city: Greenville to Terrel to Ennis; or take a chance on I-635. Would appreciate local information.
  • Avoid 635!!!!!

If I have to, I will take the trailer apart and ship it to Ft. Worth via UPS just to avoid this stretch of Urban Free(?)way.
  • I usually find US-75/I-45 to be the best way through, north to south, then use I-20 across the south side if connecting to a different route.

If coming from Oklahoma City, 35W through Fort Worth, just take my lumps on what the traffic turns out to be, it is still usually better than 35E or 635 at the same time of day.

I have some "totally avoid Dallas by at least 50 miles" routes, east and west, depending on your actual Texas destination. Hugo, Paris, Palestine, Crockett, Huntsvill, for example, going to Houston.

Doesn't work so well for Ennis, since it is already closer than 50 to Dallas, but Texas highway 34 (from Greenville) is far enough out to not be clogged with suburban traffic, you can get there on Texas 24 out of Paris.
  • A few weeks ago we were coming from Oklahoma City and took 635......NEVER do that again...construction, traffic, etc. I'd go 200 miles outta my way to not do that again....
  • Do Highway 34 from Greenville to Terrell to Ennis....two lanes and a few small town (lights) but it is worth it. AVOID NORTH DALLAS and 635......I live in Terrell and go 35 miles out of my way/direction to avoid 635 and 75....when heading south we use 34 all the time....when heading north we do 34 if going east , 205 thru Rockwall if going north / north west....
  • If you come down 75 around noon just go straight thru Dallas. Except for about 2 miles of construction thru McKinney you should have no problem. 75 turns into I-45 downtown and continues on down to Ennis. Do not try to take I-635 around the city.
If you decide on Greenville to I-30 to Dallas you will take I-635 south to I-20 west to I-45 south to Ennis.
I live in McKinney, 30 miles north of Dallas, and have towed the 5er thru there a number of times, even during rush hour. US 75 I-45 straight thru is your best bet.
  • As a long time resident, now retired to near Tyler, TX, I can tell you any of the routes thru Dallas are pretty horrible. Noon time Friday might be the best time, though. It's going to be 1 1/2 hours of white knuckle any way you do it. I would recommend winding down on state highways to Canton, TX, then Kaufman, then Ennis, but that would be about an hour longer and 30 miles further. Good luck.

If I had a gun to my head and had to do it, I'd probably cut off from I75 onto 635 around to I45, then south to Waxahatchie, then over to Ennis.
  • My rule of the road: If avoiding a large and congested city such as Dallas is a viable option, I would do it.

My trip in TX some years back involved 635 around Dallas. I'll never do that again and I was in a car.
