Requesting Texas highway information

TyroneandGladys, thanks for the campground suggestion in Kerrville. I'll check it out. It's always good to hear what people who have actually stayed somewhere have to say about it.

Brooks379, I agree about ALL interstates in and around major cities! After pulling down I-35 through downtown Austin at 5 p.m. one year my wife and I made an agreement that we will go AROUND the major cities from now on, even if we have to drive further and longer!

No problem !!! All good roads and easy to drive.
Texas has by far the best secondary roads in the country . FM/Farm to Market, state, US routes, County roads are all good, plus all the bridges are marked for the height of the bridge.
Now I wouldn't give you a nickel for the Interstates around Houston, Dallas or San Antonio.

Being from Oklahoma and Texas I have found that generally Texas farm to market roads are in better shape than even the toll roads in OK. Do not know where you plan to stay but we loved the hill side of Kerrville Schreiner Park

Thank you to all who have replied! I really appreciate the information. So far I have found the Texas roads by and large much better than ours here in Oklahoma, and from your replies it sounds like these roads should be no exception.

We have pulled on all those roads.

We have also gone 281 to 16 and 16 all the way to Kerrville.

We have stayed in RV parks in Ranger and San Saba and Fredericksburg. Pick up 16 just before Markley. Don't go 281 to Jacksboro.

I would go the 281 to 16.
You will have no problem on either route.

I wouldn't be bothered about any of those roads or even the "farm to market" hwys.
If you get on a two lane road with no shoulders, drive a comfortable speed and enjoy the drive.

I've driven all those stretches within the past two years.

US-281 - best north/south route in the state in my opinion. You will make the best time on 281 from WF all the way to Johnson City

US-67/377 - very good road, light traffic

TX-16 - a good road, two lane most of the way. Goes through some small towns. You will make better time on 281, but enjoy the view better on 16.

Fuel will usually be a bit cheaper on 281 than 16.

You want to check the route road conditions before you actually start.Drive Texas

I use Google earth and it's street view. If you see an eighteen wheeler along your route, you'll be fine.

I can only help with the southern end. 281 is a very good highway from Lampasas to Johnson City, 4 lanes. And 290 from there to Fredericksburg to 16 is the same.

I love 16 from Llano to Fredericksburg. A really pretty drive. The highway is good, but narrower 2 lane, somewhat winding, and little to no shoulders. But very little traffic. I would not hesitate to tow my 5er that route. Just watch for deer. Bodies on the side of the road are common. And pretty much the same from Fredericksburg to Kerrville except the highway is a little wider with better shoulders.

I have not been on those specific highways; but have found that in general state and federal routes in Texas are superior those in the rest of the country.
