Reupholstery

A few years ago I had my '02 Journey DL painted in Mexico. I was and still am very pleased with the results. The outside looks great, but the inside is getting a bit ratty. Does anyone know of a place that refurbishes the inside of the motorhome, sofa, dinette, window valences, etc?
Thanks,

Paul

  • When you say not available in Mexico that is a big misnomer. Border towns have access to anything sold in the U.S. Many cross the border and buy goods to use in their shops.
  • An inch worth of topper memory foam and breathable fabric made a great addition to an inch of medium firm foam and then high cell count softer foam - none of this is available in Mexico.

Upholsterer's try and recycle foam. Problem is that foam as they stuff it in is usually decomposed to the point of crumbling

Aduaneros, Mexican Customs are -particularly- sensitive about 'importing' raw foam. They do not care what it is for. Best to wrap the new stuff and hide it n a compartment. Same for the tela, the cloth. When I buy foam and cloth NOB I ask for a knowledgeable recommendation for proper thread. Tell them it's for "Heavy Duty" use.

I hate to say this but when using an 'unverified' upholsterer find some way to actually eyeball the assembled foam before the final inner covering is stitched on. Some shops are less unscrupulous than others and suddenly decide innovating a bit of your new foam with a lot of your old foam affords them with an irresistible opportunity to squirrel away the 'extra' foam -That Is of course, Obviously not Needed- some or a lot of the new foam you brought down. Foam is -expensive- in Mexico,
  • I had my entire RV reupholstered while having it painted in Algodones. We went to San Luis with the upholster because we wanted to match our ultra leather and they had it available. He did the window trims dinning chairs,j-lounge window treatments, driver/passenger seats and our entire dash, all of it was as good as the factory. We paid $1,100.00 including the material picked by us.The j-lounge, dash, wall side panels and drivers and passenger chairs were done in ultra leather. He did my front and rear seats in my Jeep for $250.00 in vinyl.
This was about 5 years ago. I still have an e-mail address for him but he speaks very little English.
  • Mexican foam comes in 2 types. Hard like concrete and soft like feathers. There is only one quality: Really bad. It will crumble in a few years. The fabric is not great either. Some of the shops carry usa fabric and foam. The workmanship is often superb.

  • We have had upholstery redone in 2 motorhomes in Mexico. The first one was done in light coloured cotton and it was impossible to clean! The second was done in high quality vinyl (what they use in pleasure boats) which was fine. Until one of the dogs climbed onto the sofa trying to get out the window to escape the noise of nearby fireworks!

Mexicowanderer lives in Mexico, he should know!
  • A hint. FOAM is crucial and it is expensive and limited in scale of quality in Mexico. I brought fabric referred to as "Theater Cloth" with me. You have to ask a good fabric store in the USA the advantages of theater cloth. For my poor back a lamination of several grades a foam brought forth a near miracle for my herniated disc. Top quality zippers make covering removal a snap to wash fabrics which I insisted be extremely breathable. I even used Kevlar thread in the driver seat. It is not cheap but it will not break. Period.
