Road between Durango and Ouray, Colorado

I inadvertently posted this question in another forum, but I am interested in finding out if there is road construction on Hwy. 550 from Durango to Ouray, Colorado.
  • If no one answers about current conditions, call the Durango Chamber or Tourist office. We were going to go that way early this summer but didn't. Last winter the road had massive rock slides that they were still trying to stabilize. The locals told us the road was only open one or two hours a day due to all of the slide work.

I don't know where you're headed after Ouray, but we were headed to Mt Rushmore so we went west from Durango to Cortez and up 141 to Grand Junction, Rifle, Gypsum, Steamboat Springs and up to Laramie. Down on 141 it was a two lane mountainous drive, but it was very nice.

  • According to Colorado Road Conditions there are no road hazards/road work at this time. Check link and look at map. There are no "Traffic Cones" like there is on I70.

    Hope this helps!

  • Travelled between Ouray and Silverton last Wednesday with no road work evident. Came back through on Sunday and of course nothing was happening then.
  • Thanks to everyone for your responses. Very helpful!

  • R U Sure U want 2 take 550? If pulling or driving an RV I'd take 145 out of Delores. There are places on 550 with NO guardrails because there is no place to mount em, just the road, the white line & the AIR.
  • 550 from Durango to Ouray...easy going...no construction. Stayed at our favorite - Haviland Lake national forest campground.
