road to Belize

We would love to travel to Belize and live there for awhile. I am getting allot of data involving car jacking and robbery and am considering other options. I have served in Iraq and Kosovo and 25 years in the Army but I was armed and DW was safely back in the states. Is this doable? can I hire reliable security to protect me?
I want to add, we would be driving a 1999 Fleetwood flair V10 with 2000 Durango Toad (older stuff)
  • I can't imagine knowingly travelling into an area where there's known violence, and considering hiring security. DW knows about this?
  • I went there twice in the late 80's there are two beiize, the one you would be in with a rv isn't the one you want.
  • She's sitting right here, been with me for 33 years through 3 tours in Germany during the Baader Meinhof gang blowing up us bases and 18 months on the isle of Create during the red army terrorist era. She followed me while I willingly faced these dangers. I am not a hero just a humble old soldier who believes the Orwell quote "People Sleep Peacefully in Their Beds at Night Only Because Rough Men Stand Ready to Do Violence on Their Behalf" So, just for fun let me change it up a little
People drive Peacefully to Belize in Their RVs Only Because Rough Men Stand Ready to Do Violence on Their Behalf!!! Hey How about that for plagiarism LOL
  • A friend of ours lived in Belize for a couple years. Bought a place there etc. He hung around this Belize forum for awhile. Here is the link. You might be able to get your security questions answered there. Driving there is no problem. Good Mexican interstates all the way and some incredible sceenery. http://www.expatexchange.com/belize/liveinbelize.html

Not sure why he left but he sold out there and moved to Chetumal. I know they travelled to Mexico for a lot of their medical as well as major purchases like appliances etc when they were in Belize. We did a quick tour and it wasn't to our liking but some like it. The standard of living is very low there and that causes some problems security wise. The average income is about 1/4 of what it is in Mexico. If you are just looking for a nice low key place to live in that part of the world I would consider the city of Chetumal on the Mexican side. Easy going without crazy amounts of tourism. Right on the golf. Nice middle class city. Here are a few shots of a nice RV park on the golf we stayed in. Its one of the places we thought we would enjoy long term if that ever comes up. Here is a link to their resort. http://www.yaxharesort.com/

    Angela looking very touristy.

    Boat launch.

    Pool area.

A few cottages if you have friends visit.

There is a restaurant and bar right on site.

    Good luck and happy trails.
  • Just as importantly, they have huge spiders there that jump out of trees! :E
  • It is very pretty, but the pictures above are few and far apart, the Islands are great. It has been a long time back for me. Check the % of who lives where also.
  • Hundreds of RV'rs travel all over MX every year without any problems. Many move on to Belize and Guatemala and further south. Just like anywhere in the world bad things can happen. Stay alert, read where it is happening and avoid those areas while this is occurring.
I, personally, don't care for Belize but love the whole MX Yucatan peninsula.
Read people's blogs and you will see how safe it really is.
But, NEVER hide a gun or ammunition. You will be jailed. They x-ray vehicles.
  • We just travelled through Belize in our RV last week; we're currently in Guatemala. We felt safe at all times. However, the Belize that is accessible by RV isn't great, especially compared to the beauty and diversity of Mexico. For us, I would recommend other countries over Belize. I feel Belize's tourist destination reputation is based mainly on the cayes, which you cannot reach by RV (except the area of Placencia in the south where many gringo's live).
  • Jimineez, I always grimace when people tell other people "Don't Do That! I Wouldn't Do That!" Allow for the fact that other folks have a certain amount of intelligence. If they go and don't like it, just keep shuffling along until they find their own personal paradise.

Belize has it's own charms and warts according to my own personal preferences. Places that hordes of gringos love I hate and verse visa. If I listened to the consensus of friends, decades ago I would be stuck in a ticky-tacky tract home in suburbia doing mental calisthenics over how to prepare my will and avoid probate.
