Road to Oaxaca

Hi! We're driving in a truck/camper from Melaque to Oaxaca. Haven't been there in ten or twelve years and I've heard there are many new roads and a few less campgrounds. If all goes well we could camp one night each in Guadalajara and then Puebla, and then spend 8 or 10 nights outside of Oaxaca at the Overland Oasis. Or is the downtown Oaxaca Trailer Park still functional? Is Guad too far out of the way? We drove a slow and winding road from Melaque to Mazamitla one time that passed south of Chapala and think we'd rather go the longer way on a toll road thru Colima and Guad for safety and comfort. Anyone know a better route or other places to sleep? Thanks for your help.

  • 1400 MXN? That's about $105 US? Any good food? Lived in Yuma and always wen To MX on the weekends. Seems you either love or hate it. I found the people nice and freindly and not at all rude except when they got behind the wheel of a pickup;.
  • They are correct. It's a perfectly OK place to park, secure, and close to the center of things. You can also catch the bus right on the corner to downtown, and there is a major market around the corner.
In Oaxaca, you want to be as close to the center of things for the experience.
  • The Oaxaca Trailer park is still open. It's not pretty, but it's the best location if you want to spend time in the city and surroundings. The taxi ride to centro is about 50 pesos and you can get one right at the street corner there. Compare that for convenience to being out in the valley and making your way back and forth, especially if you're downtown after dark (highly recommended !). We negotiated the price at the park and I seem to remember getting it for 1400/week or less. RYV
  • Look up the OverlanderOasis.com which is just south or east of town in SantaMaria de Tule. The can easily accommodate you.
  • It's been posted that Oaxaca Trailer Park is still as functional as it's been for the last 10+ years.
The toll road is a lot less wear and tear on your vehicle and self, and faster.
San Jose del Tajo in Guad is a dump, but a place to stay, and not far off of the road.
  • It seems like a long detour to Me ! The Two RV parks in Valle de Juarez could benefit from Your business.

    Just saying!
