Bussskipper, I saw a semi truck coming down that stretch of Independence Pass, right into the waiting arms of law enforcement! The sign says the ticket is over a thousand dollars.
In a different vein, we were coming back over the Pass late last summer and saw our local unicyclist riding DOWN the east side of the pass. He was about five miles above Twin Lakes. The climb up is impressive enough, but on the way down, one can't coast on a unicycle, but must peddle the whole way down. There is a brake lever under the seat to control ones speed.
This guy has long flowing white hair and is in his 60's. I've seen him on McClure Pass (8755' and 8%) before, but going over Independence Pass means climbing to 12095' on
only a 6% grade. We've seen this same guy riding down moguls on a powder day at Aspen Highlands. Way crazy.
