Roadtrip through Central America

We're hopefully getting close to our departure date: we'll be (attempting) taking a trip through Central America for the next 3-4 months. :)

Our previous trip has taken us from Texas up to Alaska and back, from May through November 2013 (7 month trip). This was with an Airstream travel trailer towed behind a Jeep Commander (with the Hemi and 4x4).
The trip report and pictures are here: Austin to the Arctic - May to November 2013

Upon arriving back in Texas a few weeks ago, we decided to extend our trip south and go explore Central America.
We sold our Jeep and placed the Airstream for sale (consignment at RV Land in Kyle, TX).
Since the roads in Central America are expected to be worse, we opted for a truck and truck camper combination. We purchased a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500
DRW 4x4 and a new 2014 Livin Lite Camp Lite 8.6

I would love to hear about recommendations on places that we must visit on our trip south!
As usual, we'll be keeping our blog updated (that is, whenever we find wifi) here: Roadtrip through Central America
  • http://www.travelin-tortuga.com/site5/TT-South_America/South_America.html (Had to reload several times to get to load and very slow)
Several years ago (so things might of changed) we thought that would be the thing to do. If I remember correctly what stands out in my mind after reading all the blogs at the time, here is what stood out in my mind::
-some countries have a different propane valve or fitting for filling and our US type tank and might not work, or used butane and propane hard to get. I think it was way south in south America.
-Rv dump stations were far and few in between.
-Got hassled at the border several times, price to cross was how much they had in frig.
    - every blog we read, people had trying times and some very good times.

Is you power unit OK on NON ultra low diesel? Don't know if that is a concern or not, just throwing it out.
  • You could pick up some helpful hints from a tour that a couple of guys did in Earthroamer vehicles. Go the the Earthroamer home page a search
search the expedition section for their trip report. Lots of interesting info.
  • Enjoy it, life is to short. I visited a friend today who drove a 1960 190 D. in 1960 from Phx south as far as they could drive it. I have visited most of the country you are going to in rented cars in the late 80's enjoyed it very much.
  • Very nice looking rig.Just a couple of thoughts, not sure I would have went dual wheel for the looks of some of the roads ahead.Did you need it for weight.that diesel is heavy front weight.Have fun should be quite a trip.
  • There was a recent story of a young couple with a truck camper that was making the same trip......were robbed, beaten and held captive for months..enough said. Good Luck
  • Good luck to you, you're braver than me. I don't think I'd be driving through some of those countries myself.
