ROLL CALL! Atlantic Canada and Maritimes 2014

I think that the drive along the St Lawrence,
around the Gaspe is the best shoreline drive in N America,
far outdoing both the Cabot trail and the Pacific Coast highway.

Hope to do it again this July.

One great unexpected Newfoundland sight for us was the huge puffin colony at Elliston on the Bonavista Peninsula at the eastern side of the island. Could have sat on the grass for hours watching the birds burrow, take off, fish and land to feed their chicks. Bring binoculars and a camera with a good zoom lens.

Enjoyed the Quidi Vidi (pron. kiddy-viddy) brewery tour in St. John's and loved the iceberg beer. They really do brew it from iceberg water.

Everybody makes their own discoveries and NL is chock full of possibilities.

We planned on doing both ferries. Thanks for the recommendation to get a berth, I planned on doing that anyway but now I won't feel guilty about it. ;)

If going to Newfoundland go up to St Anthony to see the whales and icebergs. Just on the other side of the ferry is the nicest campground we have ever stayed at. If you get a chance stay at the Grand Codroy campground.

1.- several parts of Gros Morne National Park. Do both visitors centres, north and south sides of Bonne Bay. Do ponds boat tours, both. I haven't done those whale watching boat tours (have dogs, eh), Gros Morne Theatre Festival - especially Tempting Providence - re. what has happened on that coast.

2. L'anse aux Meadows World Heritage Viking Settlement site. & also go to Norsted, for more on that topic, including boat that did trip from Iceland.

The hubby and I are both fat and lazy. With that, we like moderate hikes, geocaching, shopping, and enjoying beautiful scenery. Looks like we will love all your recommendations!

If you like shopping g try Water st in St. John's. Parking sucks but if you are there early it shouldn't be an issue. It is all small shops that line the entire street. Some are upscale, some not so much but all make the trip worthwhile. Just up one street is Duckworth street. More small shops line the street as well as quite a few restaurants with decent food.

For traditional Newfoundland food with twist try Bacalao, but make sure you have reservations.

As for other things to see and do: Cape Spear the most easterly point in North America, Suganl Hill where the first trans-Atlantic wireless message was received. Cupids, the oldest English community in Canada,

Pick up a map of Newfoundland at a tourism kiosk. On the map are numerous scenic drives all over the island.

If you here in early August check out the Mussel Bed Sioree. They usually have decent bands or late July has the Salmon Festival. The last few years have had huge bands (KISS, The Eagles) get your tickets early they usually sell out.

There are also lots of local festivals. Just google the name of the town and check for an events tab.

Any questions ask. There a few members that live here on the island.

One more thing, many people do is to take the ferry to Port Aux Basques and leave from Argentia(or vice versa) This means that you don't have to backtrack. This also needs to be booked ahead sine they are usually busy during the summer, and make sure you book a berth. The short trip to Port Aux Basqes is still an 8hr trip. The one to Argentia is 16hr You will want to be rested to enjoy our beautiful province.

We have to be in Albuquerque by Oct 1 because we have reservations at the Balloon Fiesta. But that should give us time to enjoy the fall colors in Atlantic Canada.

When we went to Newfoundland in 2009 I drove Little Kopit crazy with questions and he was an invaluable resource. We had a wonderful trip but my DH was still working and we had to be home at a certain time. We want to go back with no schedule. We can't leave until mid-June as I have a big writing project to finish. Thinking about the possibility of this trip inspires me to keep my fanny on the chair and my fingers on the computer. lizzie.
