Roswell to Alamogordo on 70 vs Tucumcari on 54 in wind?

High wind warning today... One route is vega (Amarillo) to Alamogordo through Roswell on 60 & 70. The other is 40 through Tucumcari & Santa Rosa on 54. Which would you take for less wind? Do both go over a high pass? Hubby is concerned about the stretch from Roswell to Alamogordo. I am thinking that route may be better than 54. It looks like the miles of windy driving may be higher through Santa Rosa. Help! We leave this morning. Thanks! The wind advisory is new this morning. ??
  • Looking at the overall wind forecast for the state you will have less wind on 70 than on I-40 and 54. Still windy but not as bad on 70 and much better once you get past Roswell and get into the wind shadow of the mountains. Go to link and it shows the approx. wind speeds for your route at various times of the day.

PS: the wind is always blowing in West TX and Eastern NM. Sometimes it pushes you along to get better mileage and sometimes it holds you back.
  • Over all 380/70 through Ruidoso is a better choice.

There is a pass between Roswell and Alamogordo but it is not steep and is mostly wide shoulders, gentle grades and 4 lane road. 380/70 from Roswell to US 70 turn off follows a river and is easy driving. There are a few curves and small towns along 380 and 70 but it is a good road and is more like a freeway than 54.

(BE aware that vehicles over 65 ft are prohibited past the 70/380 split at Hondo on 380 towards Carrizozo) Staying on 380 to 54 in Carrizozo will by-pass the pass on 70 but is only worth it if you like 2 lane, curvy, scenic, historic route roads.

54/I-40 is flatter over all and does not go over any passes. It is a good road but 54 is mostly 2 lane with wide shoulders and little traffic.

I would expect more wind effect on I-40, 54 and 60 because they are on flatter country. Fuel stops and towns are easier access and pricing is better on 70 also. There is a by-pass around Roswell and if you do not need fuel I would use it. If you need fuel then turn onto 285 into town and pick your station.
