Route 287 in Wyoming

I recently booked a CG stay at Colter Bay, WY for next summer. I'm wondering about route 287 from I-80 (Rawlins, WY) up to Moran/Colter. We are driving a 40 foot motorhome. Not looking to make the D.W. nervous! Any thoughts w/b much appreciated.
  • One of my favorite drives. The morning views of the Tetons are worth the drive.
  • This is our favorite route to Tetons and Yellowstone. Have made it several times pulling 34' Fifth-wheel.

Recently rebuilt after Dubois and it's our favorite way into the Tetons... easy beautiful road and I would add Sinks Canyon SP in Lander as a must see. Great little welcome center and reports of free boondocking at the Lander City Park.
  • We ran this route on our way up to Anchorage from west Georgia about 3 months ago with our moho and toad. I think its good road with spectacular scenery. Long way between stops so keep an eye on fuel- not a problem but just be aware of your needle and where the next burg with fuel is.

We split the run from Rawlins up to Yellowstone into 2 days, stopping in Dubois which we really enjoyed

The only downer about that route for us was there was a good bit of loose gravel on the road surface (late summer). As we approached the Teton's we caught three rocks on two separate occasions west of Dubois from semis passing us in the other direction. The first passing semi and flying rock dinged it but it was repairable. The next tanker passed us heading southeast as we approached the Tetons and hit us with 2 rocks at once, one of which cracked the windshield with a 2 foot long crack. That got us a new windshield. I kind of chalk it all up to bad luck as we ran the rest of the 12,000 mile trip without another hit.

All that said I will definitely travel that road again. And I can't wait to do it again!

PS There are a few significant grades as you get west of Dubois moving towards the teton's, but we had no problem with our 31 foot gasser towing the dolly and Focus

As routes to Teton/Yellowstone go, this is not a difficult route. Vacationers use it all the time, US 287 and US 191 are the two main ways to access the southern part of Yellowstone and Teton.

It's about 120 miles from Rawlins to Lander, and about 100 miles from Lander to Moran area, so plan fuel stops accordingly. Sorta flat/sorts rolling landscape for a goodly part of the way, and you'll have Togwotee Pass (about 9500 feet) to go over, but for a western pass, it's not overly difficult. From Lander (~5300 feet) to Togwotee is just a slow steady climb. From Togwotee down to Moran is a bit steep since you're dropping down from 9500 to 6700 feet in about a 20-25 mile distance, but like I said, it's not overly difficult. Certainly not like some of the passes in Colorado.

I'm sure some of our good Wyoming folks will add more insight in the drive.
