Route 299 Between Redding and Arcata

No problem for skilled drivers. Not a good route for the novice.

Donn0128 and I often disagree about this section of 299. The key is if you are in Redding and want to get to Arcata. If that is the case, 299 is the way to go.

I personally call it puke highway.
Slow, lots of curves and as I remember three pretty good climbs, and of course decents on the other side. The first climb is outside of Redding at the west end of the lake. About two thousand feet in five miles of 25MPH road. Unless you like burning a lot of fuel, I would opt for either 20 around Clear Lake or 199 out of Grants Pass. Both are 10 times better.

We like it but you may want to check with Cal Trans for the construction delays. Quite a few from what I've heard.
