Route 50 through Kansas

DW and I are considering leaving Colorado Springs and driving route 50 through Kansas on our way to NH.

AHas anyone driven this road and can you recommend anything to do along the way? We are planning about 2 weeks to get to NH so we do have some spare time.

Our alternative thought is to head to South Dakota but we have been there three times and have done most of the area that we liked.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

We are taking route 50 for most of this trip from Florida to NM, etc since we have travelled the other major roads.

Thanks for any thoughts and advice.

  • Thanks all for the info.

Seems like there may be a couple of things that we may look into a bit more.

Canon City Royal Gorge is worth seeing even though you can only cross the bridge on the weekend. A fire in June 2013 burned all of the facilities.

The train ride from Canon city through the gorge is well worth the money. Just did that last week and we enjoyed the two hour trip.

Do the city tour in Dodge we found it very informative.

As for highway 50 I just came from Wichita Kansas to Ogden Utah via US 50. The road surface on highway 50 was in much better condition than any of the Interstates I was on during my 3000 mile trip. I40 in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona. I70 in Colorado and Utah. And we found US 6 in Utah in very good condition.

Traffic was very light with a very low truck count on Us 50 and Us 6. (the reason our interstates are in such poor condition, Overloaded trucks)
My part of US-50 in southern Indiana has a lot of truck traffic. Please let me know if you are going to use it as there is an item you need to know about.
  • isn't Capote's In Cold Blood book written about some event along 50? and the world's largest hand dug well is somewhere there also?
    bumpy

  • US 50 is a good road but it does carry a lot of truck traffic. However most of the road is a super two with passing lanes every few miles. Although not exactly a tourist attraction, you might find Greensburg interesting. The town was literally wiped out by an F5 tornado five years ago and it is/has been rebuilt using green technology. There are also many good mom & pop restaurants to stop at along the way. Just look to see where the cowboys are eating.
  • lake scott state park was sort of interesting, chalk pyramids, castle rock all are a ways NOrth of 50 but Dodge city is the only thing on 50.
    bumpy
  • Dodge City is worth a look if you liked Gunsmoke. :)
Further east is Hutchinson where I think there is a big AirSpace Museum.
Still further east is the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, a bit north of 50 on highway 57 at Strong City. Cottonwood Falls is a dinky little town a mile south of Strong City, but they have a little city or county park you can camp in. Strong City probably does, too, but can't vouch for that.
