Route 50 through Kansas

I am planning on going to Colorado this summer. I will need to go through Kansas. I will be coming from Missouri. I was thinking about taking Rte 50 from Emporia all the way to Salida Co. I know the quickest way through Kansas is Rte 70 but I have plenty of time.
I would appreciate any input. I will be pulling a 25' travel trailer.

  • Another option would be Rt 36. It runs north of I-70 and if you head north from St Louis you can catch it. 2 Lane most of the way. Good road with little traffic. When you get to Marysville Kansas they have a town park with free camping. Including 30-50 amp hookups and a dump station.
  • From Emporia I like 50 to 150 that turns into 56. In Great Bend I take 96 that goes back to 50 in Colorado. I cut from 96 at Ordway Colorado over to 50. The last few miles of 96 are rough.

Hardly any traffic on 96, hardly anything on 96. If you want more amenities I would stick with 50.

Use to pull my TT to Salida that way.
  • Except for West Virginia. I will never do US 50 again through West Virginia.

Great road. Fast, execpt where it actually goes through some small towns. Larger towns have bypasses. It is a mixed bag of multi lane & 2 lane with passing zones. Not much traffic.

Beats I70 no matter how you look at it.
  • We use it on our way to Gunnison from Wichita it's a good road. There's a super Walmart in Garden City ks right off 50 if you need to take a break and stock up.
Next Walmart will be in Lamar CO with not much in between.
We will be taking 50 out of Wichita end of April on our way to Gunnison for the summer.
  • Great highway!
We also drive the US highways and primary state highways.
  • We rarely travel interstates. As long as you have the time you'll see more by getting off them. Hwy 50 is a good highway. Many towns will have city parks where you're allowed to spend a night. Check them out. We've found some jewels. Have a good trip!
