- rocmocExplorerHave driven MH & pulled 5er thu this area many times, called Salt River Canyon. It is STEEP & WINDY, about 3 times worse than the Grapevine N/O Los Angles, CA. Very doable but allow enough time to go slowly and safely. Road surface is smooth with many turnouts. When I say steep, I mean both up & down. It is a great scenic drive tho the passenger is the only one that gets to enjoy if they are not afraid of sheer drop-off highway edges of nearly a thousand feet.
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico - BobKrogstieExplorerrocmoc pretty much nailed it. Make sure your brakes are in good shape and hopefully you have an exhaust brake on your truck.
- amandasgrammaExplorerWe did it last year, pulling a 34 footer with Ram 3500. We don't think it's worse than the Grapevine. You should have no problem.
- jackandh2oExplorerI have done it twice, the last time about 3 weeks ago. As said earlier a lot of up and down. I pull a 33ft 5er. I would really like to drive it again sometime in a car so I could enjoy the beautiful scenery.
- Hank85713Explorerwas just up there last week. Son in law pulled my TT with a '15 3.5 ecoford and had no issues. I drove my Winnebago aspect without any issues. Not really all that steep but is a good downhill but tow haul works and if you have the exhaust brake will not be an issue. there are 2 other grades one outside cibecue southbound prior to the canyon and another pull to seneca, and 1 last one into globe. You will not have any issues unless you are not paying attention to the speed limit signs. Cops like to hang out on this route also particularly around globe and the long pull into. Gas was 2.00 a gallon BTW. The new Mc D's is bigger but service sucks. Has a good parking area on west side with the turn lane at the end wide enough.
depends on your final destination, there was some blasting going on along 60 so it was closed for a couple of hours in AM (10-12) and PM (1-3) these are approx times. - brooks379ExplorerI love that stretch of road...BEAUTIFUL !!!
- Passin_ThruExplorerI wouldn't eat at Mcds if you paid me. They serve Cancer eyed cows, used to haul them to San Antonio for them. The Salt River Canyon is beautiful, take your time descending. Hard turn at the bottom across the bridge and right back uphill. Ran it every week for a long time hauling grain and cattle. Make sure you have full gas if you run from there to NM. Nights are pretty bleak b/n Show Low and Socorro.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIDrove it with our 40' motorhome towing many times. It's no problem. It just depends how you feel about your braking on downhills. Get into low gear BEFORE you start a downhill and you'll be good to go. Keep your foot off the brake pedal as much as possible and if you're in the lowest gear this can be done. It's driven by many RVers.
- mileshuffExplorerIts not a problem for most RV'ers. Very well traveled road with many RV'ers using it routinely. That said, its not a fun drive to me. I tend to avoid it.
Is Globe your destination or are you driving on to Phoenix area?
If Phoenix, I tend to highly favor 260 to 87. All very good road with 87 being mostly 4 lane divided. - tom3171Explorerthanks all you for your input.
mileshuff my final destination is Apache junction. driving down from Colorado to holbrook and then down to show low. is there a better route i should know about?
