Route 66 trip?

Only sections of 66 still exist but you can take it from LA to Chicago.

In a lot of places "Old 66" is the frontage road along an interstate; in other places it was replaced by an interstate.

Longest continuous section is from Kingman, AZ to Seligman, AZ.......about 87 miles.

Not much to see.........cause it's desert.

As you travel along I 40 through AZ, NM, and TX and OK, you can get off at each town and take the business route through town. That will be 66 a lot of the time.

There's a section of it from OK City to Tulsa, too.

Last time I was on RT66 was in AZ around the Flagstaff-Kingman-Williams area...

Everyone should get a photo of them standing next to one of the RT66 road signs. I got mine around here somewhere hehe...

In Winslow, AZ, there's a "Standin' on the Corner" mural painted on the side of an old building (homage to The Eagles) facing an intersection on 66 downtown. Funky shop on another corner with all things 66 to purchase.

At Petrified Forest/Painted Desert NP, there is a small monument to the Mother Road.

Shamrock, TX also has a nice stretch of od 66 downtown with restored gas station and some almost crumbled original buildings.

I saw that piece on NBC last night, too. Nice. I remember that teepee motel from my childhood family road trips. Made me wish we were headed west again this year.

There is places that the hwy is a walking path.
One place is across the Mississippi River north of St. Louis. Great long walk across the bridge.

We have hit many short sections
We are thinking of doing Hwy from Kingman east toward Springfield, Indiana.

While Route 66 has been decommissioned -- hence only remnants remain -- a couple of the other old routes remain.

*Highway 64 goes from North Carolina to just over the Arizona line near the four corners area.

*Highway 60 runs from Virginia to western Arizona.

Both of them go through a bunch of visually, historically, and culturally great areas, at least in the southwest!

There are lots of publications covering Route 66 including the one in my hand called `Route 66 Travelers Guide' by Tom Snyder. The intro by Bobby Troup, who wrote the song about getting kicks..., is interesting.
