A few years back we did Route 66 from Springfield Illinois to Needles. We purchased Tom Snyder Route 66 Traveler's Guide and Roadside Companion book(ISBN 978-0-312-64425-3). It has some small area maps and lots of Route information. Amazon
Big item to watch out for is load limits on some original bridges, height of bridges, roads that don't go through any longer with no warning and no places to turn around.
