Route advice needed - Going to Osoyoos from Vancouver

Hi all,

This is our first season camping with a travel trailer. We have a 5.0L F-150 with tow pkg, which is pulling a 27' TT, (5500lb).

I am fairly comfortable towing it, but live on vancouver island and haven't done any long treks yet. We're headed to Osoyoos in a couple of days and I am debating my route.

I was planning on going the Hope-Princeton Hwy, but am wondering if it will give me any difficulties with a 50ft total length.

I'm not concerned with time, but safety and peace of mind is my priority. Would I be better off going the Coke or sticking with the Hope-Princeton?

Any advice and suggestions more than welcome...

Thanks in advance,
Ryan
  • Definitely highway 3 rather then the Gogohilly.

  • The Coq is a long way UP then a long way down. We like the drive and will usually choose it over the Fraser Canyon. The truck's engine works and works on the uphill though and it isn't uncommon to see overheated vehicles on the way up. The transmission seemed to take most of the load on the long descent but do be sure your brakes are in good condition.

Hope-Princteon has more variety and is also a nice drive. We go through at our own pace and pull over to let those in more of hurry go on by because passing opportunities are limited.
  • WE have done this trip so many times with a similar set up, and would always do Hwy 3, Hope/Princeton, even though all those hairpins around Sunday Summit are tiresome, they are easily handled.
  • Definatly go #3 as going the coke to merritt and kelowna is all HILLS and quite a distance out of your way, #3 is a very good road now so you will have no worries going that way.And a lot easier on your truck, Just my thoughts as I hate the Coke with a passion.
  • The Hope-Princeton is a good road, the commercial truckers use it regularly so you won't have a problem. Take it easy around the Skagit bluffs and over Sunday summit, a number of sharp curves and stiff grades. Not trying to scare you but be aware.
  • Hope- Princeton- Osoyoos on #3. Take your time and enjoy the ride.
