We also live off I-20 (25 miles North). We had always taken I-30 from Mount Pleasant to Greenville, then TX 180 to Decatur where we picked up US 287. TX 180 became more and more congested with traffic and traffic signals.
Now we go on US 271 from Mount Pleasant to Paris, TX and then follow US 82 over to US 287 near Wichita Falls. We have found this to be a much more pleasnt drive. Some interesting comments: Sherman is one of the easiest towns to drive through--almost no slow down at all. Gainsville is one of the worst towns to drive through--stop and start and limit of 35 MPH.
We enjoy eating at Muenster, a German traditional community. Also a nice little Mexican restaurant in Whitesboro. Unfortunately, a nice little RV Park in Whitesboro has recently closed. On up 287 there is The Ole Town Cotton Gin in Goodlett, TX which is a good overnigh stop.
