Near Aztec there is also Salmon Ruins. Bandelier National Monument is not too far from Sante Fe.
...we love seeing the ruins...
In Utah South of Moab on the way to Monument Valley are Edge of the Cedars State Park, the South Fork of Mule Canyon and House on Fire, and Hovenweep National Monument. - Roy_LynneExplorerWe are actually planning to go in the opposite direction. From Alb. we are going to go to Gallup and stay at the State Park there (Red Rock), then to check out Chaco Canyon for a couple of days, also plan to stay at Farmington to check out the Bitsi and Aztec and then north to Mesa Verde (we love seeing the ruins) and west to Monument Valley (via Four Corners - where I understand you can get some awesome fry bread) and then up to Blanding and Moab. I'm so excited I can't wait.

Best attraction on your route. Blakes Lot-a-Burger in Gallup at exit 20 on I-40, for a green chile cheeseburger and curly frys.
Hmmm, think we'll give it a try on our trip through there in Oct. Thanks for the tip!

Blakes is good. It's the Whataburger of New Mexico (or is Whataburger the Blakes of Texas?) - NMDriverExplorerBest attraction on your route. Blakes Lot-a-Burger in Gallup at exit 20 on I-40, for a green chile cheeseburger and curly frys.
- trailertravelerExplorerBetween Gallup and Acoma Sky City, which was already mentioned there are El Malpais National Monument, El Moro National Monument, the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, and the Mining Museum in Grants.

On our way back to Texas, we'll be taking 191 through Moab, UT, then in Monticello we'll be turning east on 491 and taking it down to Gallup, NM. Then we'll take I-40 into Albuquerque.
The suggestion about going through Colorado is a good one, and if you've never been through that part of the country, I would recommend it.
Hope this helps. - LaurenExplorerAmazing what we learn from technology ! Well, so much for that! Well, at least the Indian booths will be there for one to shop.
