What day of the week and time will you be crossing? East to west is best direction. Neither direction is good 7-9 am and 3-7 pm. Backups can be expected any time Od day. You could get off on Airline hey when entering B R cross what we call the old bridge the get back on the interstate at hwy 415 which is just about 5 miles on the other side of the river. Personally I would go through BR all the way and take my chances.
The question is confusing since bob213 may be talking about the US-190 bridge north of the I-10 bridge in Baton Rouge/Port Allen or US-90 as a way to avoid that bridge and Baton Rouge altogether by coming south out of New Orleans across the Mississippi, going through Morgan City, New Iberia and rejoining I-10 at Lafayette.
I actually use the LA-415 route to jump over from I-10 and use US-190/LA-12/TX-12 to cross Louisiana parallel to I-10 and rejoin the interstate in Vidor, TX. Better road and much less stressful. I don't have any qualms about crossing the I-10 Mississippi bridge other than the traffic involved in the approach in Baton Rouge.
US-90 from New Orleans to Lafayette is OK, though it is a little rough in spots. It is an interesting drive through Cajun country. You can use I-49 to go on up to US-190 and avoid I-10 in Louisiana as I said before.
I cannot speak to the approach and crossing of the Mississippi using the US-190 bridge in Baton Rouge from experience.
