Route from Springfield MO to South Padre Island

Need advice about US 69 from Big Cabin OK to TX border.  We don't like stop and go traffic, so are considering I-44 to OK city and South on I-35.  Anyone travel those roads in recent few years?  Than...

I35 from Denton TX thru Dallas can be quite a shock depending on time of day. Expect stop n go heavy traffic during rush hours
