Rick, I remember we talked about Hwy 37 versus the Alaska Hwy in a previous thread. Choosing to go on the Alaska should be a fine choice at this time of year. The road maintenance will be better, in case of a snow storm blowing through.
I believe there is a problem with handgun ammo, as well as the hand guns. Since I haven't gone through with either in many years, not for sure on the answer but lean toward them being a no-no. The shotgun should just be a matter of filling out the form, signing it in front of the officer and paying the fee.
Hwy 29 is a good ride, last time I was on it there were lots of political protests signs about some potential dam that might be built, one of the towns has the world's largest fly rod, located at a city park and a nice spot to stop for a leg stretch and walk around.
