I have used all the above mentioned routes. The Tap Zee is great unless there is some major traffic tie up. Its free southbound but expensive north bound. My present favorite route is 90 to 87 to 287 to 78 to 81 to 64. Been using this route to/from Maine the past three years or so with zero big delays. Avoids all the big city traffic but a few miles longer and some tolls. Usually roll along at 65 to 70 the entire time. 84 to 684 to Tap Zee is shorter to 287 but 84 is a PITA and traffic can back up for miles at the Tap Zee. If you use the Tap Zee consider 78 to 81 as it avoids the steep grades from Scranton on south if you take 84 to 81. Mid day traffic rolls right thru NY and NJ and Pa on my route. From your home area my first stop would be Western Village near Carlisle off 81 (long pull thrus and easy on/off. Next day I would be in Richmond by early afternoon. Two easy days.
Bill, is all the construction around the Rampo rest area on 87 all done?
I had clear sailing running south on 87 this October. Also 78 was clear of construction. They were working on a bridge just west of Allentown in the spring and had some one lane only traffic that caused some back up.
