Route to Alaska all the way through Canada?

We live in Maine and are planning a trip to Alaska this summer. We are thinking of crossing into Quebec from Maine and traveling through Canada all the way to Alaska. Most of the suggested routes seem to travel through the U.S. much of the way west and then cross the border somewhere around Montana. We are aware that it will be longer to take the northern route and that fuel is more expensive in Canada. Aside from those two issues, anything we should be aware of in choosing this route? Anything we shouldn't miss or anything we should avoid?

Thanks.

  • You will probably not find the price of fuel is so different. The US $ is 20% higher, and the US gallon is 20% smaller. Gasoline is much cheaper in the USA, but the price of diesel remains much higher.
  • I think the reason most cross out west is the Canadian fuel prices, they are higher. We paid U$7.20 a gallon of gasoline on our trip north through Britsh Columbia to the Yukon. That said when we got off the Alaska Marine Highway at Prince Rupert BC in 2013 we took the Trans-Canada Highway to Kenora ONT and cut south to International Falls MN. Beautiful drive and much to see along the way. I would love to go from coast to coast in Canada, wide open spaces and good highways along the route as far as we traveled.
  • my though is that the Canadian route is just slower because you won't be on freeways.

we're going in on june 8 from Idaho....maybe we'll run into you.
