Route to Gold Canyon

Hi,
I have been posting questions over at the Snowbird forum but now have a question about routes from I-5 (south from BC) to Gold Canyon. We have wintered here in the Palm Springs area for the past 5 years so we are comfortable getting here. So is it better to stay on I-10 then take the ring road around Phoenix, or stay up on 58 and somehow get over to Phoenix from the north? Hope this clear enough.
Cheers
  • Hwy 58 from Bakersfield, CA is good. You could then pick up I-40 to Hwy 95 toward Lake Havasu City, AZ. Take Hwy 95 to Parker, AZ and on to Quartzsite, AZ. Then pick up I-10 east. At Phoenix we prefer to pick up the north 202 which ends at Apache Junction on the far east side of Mesa. It avoids a lot of traffic of Hwy 60. We've taken the above-mentioned roads often with our 40' motorhome. They are good.
  • Last summer we were on the WA/OR coasts. When we came home to Mesa we came south on I 5 and then cut over to Bakersfield ( also last month from Fresno) then 58 to Barstow, then 247 south thru' 29 Palms to 177 south to I 10 thhen east. Assuming there are at least 2 of you - as you approach the Phoenix area ( around exit 121 or so get over into the HOV lane (yes Rv's with2 or more are legal!). Sat in that lHOV lane all the way until you see the left (HOV) exit to 202 HOV. That take s you all the way to Mesa befor the HOV lane ends. Stay on 202 all the way around until the US 60 (Superstition freeway) exit. East on 60 to Gold Canyon and you're "home".

Another choice - from Barstow take I 40 past Kingman to US 93 then south to 74 (Carefree highway) about 15 or so miles south of Wickenburg. 74 east to I 17 ans south to the 101 east. Around to the 202 and east to the US 60 .
  • Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I was not clear with the question. Next winter when we come south, we want to know if we should bypass Palm Springs all together and stay up on 58 heading east and then somehow drive south to Phoenix. Looking at Google maps, it looks like I may have to come through Palm Springs especially as I prefer to drive on 4 lane highways. I may have answered my own question but I would like other opinions.
    Cheers
  • Stay on I-10 from Palm Springs until you see US60 East to Mesa - Globe, Exit 154. This will take you to Gold Canyon. US60 is a multi lane divided highway and is also known as the Superstition Freeway. Safe journey.
