Tucson to Gold Canyon

Traveling to Gold Canyon (Apache Junction ) from Tucson, pulling a 5th wheel that need 13 ft clearance.
The google maps route picks 77 - 79 - 60.
Or I10 - 202 - 60.

Interested in hearing those with experience with either of these routes or input to something better perhaps. Thanks in advance for any input.

  • Did 77, 79, 66 route.
    Went very well, nice drive.
I wasn't the only RV era on that route yesterday as we passed many 5th Wethersfield, travel trailers and motorhomes going the oposite direction.
    Thanks for the advice.
  • Definitely take 79 through Florence. It's a flat scenic drive with hardly any traffic except for more on the weekends.
  • I like Ibrjet way no stop and go on 77 (Oracle)for ten miles. It's flat with a couple of bumps.
  • No one mentions whether this route is flat or high mountains. Can anyone comment on this aspect

The 60 around Gold Canyon can get bad on weekends this time of the year because of the Renaissance Festival.

True, but the bad traffic is mostly on the opposite side of the road from OP's direction of travel and I10 is a high speed race track at most all times going north or south between Tucson and Sun Lakes.

Would suggest weekdays before 7AM or after 9AM but before 3PM then after 6PM. The 60 around Gold Canyon can get bad on weekends this time of the year because of the Renaissance Festival.
  • We take, 79, 60 all the time. Good road and far less traffic than I10 with no clearance issues.
