route to Middlebury, In?

looking for recommendations on best route to take to get to Middlebury, In. from St. Louis area. Which road would be the best to go north, then east to Middlebury?? I-57, I-55 or US 31?

I do that, except usually short cut on Indiana 25 from Logansport to US-31. Not sure that it save me time, saves a few miles on th diagonal.
  • Make sure you visit Rise n' roll bakery on rt. 20 while you're there!
  • In Indiana, US31 to US20 is a good route. US20 is interstate quality across the south side of South Bend and Elkhart. US31 has some construction (expanding to divided), but by other accounts is a good drive.
  • 69 from Indy to Ft Wayne is a good route BUT WAY OUT OF THE WAY!

When my in laws were in St Louis our preferred route was 55 because it traveled faster than 57. If we were stopping to see family on the way we would travel 31 south to 70 west. (though Indy)

for us the Indy route took longer both directions but had free meal in the middle of the trip. The Illinois routes traveled faster on bigger roads. But the tolls on 80/90 are terribly expensive for more that 3 axles now.

I guess for me today I would use the Indy route (In laws are there now and the construction at 465 and 31 is a non issue as it travels just fine now) because of the tolls.
  • US 31 has major construction on the north side of Indy. I believe some of it is supposed to remain closed until Nov. I'd take I-69 to Ind 13 and follow it north to Middlebury if you don't mind 2 lane roads. About 125 miles and 3 hrs of time. I've only been on a small portion of hwy 13 this year but it was in better shape than most of the interstates.
  • Stay off I-55 major construction just south of Joliet. Probably 57 north to 80.
  • There was recent thread asking about Elkhart to St Louis.
