- GermaniaExplorerDrove Rt 12 over Lolo Pass awesome drive, it took us almost 6 hrs to get to Orofino. Who wants tomake good time when youhave that kind of scenery to look at.
Thanks again to everybody that helped - IslandmanExplorer IIYou will enjoy the drive, as others have noted just take it easy and watch the curves and narrowness of the roadway. Stop at the visitor center on Lolo Pass and get info about places to see and enjoy on the way. Wilderness Gateway CG is a good place to stop, even if just for lunch. The Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers are really something to admire, water is clear, but generally to cold for swimming until about August. Make sure you stop and enjoy the DeVoto Cedar Grove and Historic Lochsa Ranger Station on your travels.
- newkExplorerIt is a beautiful drive, but in an RV don't count on making good time. The curves are one right after the other, 30-35 mph in most cases.
One important word of caution: Look out for bicyclists. That road attracts lots of them, and the road's shoulders are narrow to non-existent. We were going around one curve last summer, up a slight hill, and suddenly we were greeted with a pair of cyclists dead ahead and an oncoming RV on our left. The railing on the right was pretty tight against the highway so there was little room for the bikes. I had to get on the brakes pretty hard to avoid a very serious accident. Pucker time! - soling2003ExplorerNice drive. Should be fine by June. When I went over it last week it was still 19 deg. and a bit of snow and ice on the roadway in places.

Several miles out of Lolo there is a sign on the right side of US 12 going west for the Lumberjack Saloon. It is worth the trip of about 2 miles back a good gravel road to check the place out. Neat place.

If it's the same place I remember from my younger days, they have a very interesting decor.... You need to see their collections.
Also, the hot springs are worth a day at least. Brings a whole new meaning to hot-tub and massaging waters.
x2 on the hot springs. and a few of the loads that emmert international pulled over that road would make your MH + toad look like a smart car in size comparison!! Very pretty drive, nice campgrounds. - GermaniaExplorerThanks for all of the advice, hope to be in that area mid june

Forest service campgrounds open on memorial weekend. Wilderness gateway campground (between mp 123 and 122) may have a loop open earlier, they sometimes do for the rafters. Lots of places to pull off and hike trails or just look at the river. We go that way often and enjoy the camping along the way as it is close to home.
