Rt. 287 in PA to Wellsboro

Has anyone been on route 287 from Jersey Shore (the town) to Wellsboro? We're not sure if we should go up 287 or take a bit longer and go up 15. Interested in the ease of travel - like are there steep grades or lots of curves...

We're going to the Grand Canyon....(of PA). :B

  • The Pine Creek Rail Trail runs for some 60 miles in the bottom of the canyon and beyond. If you have bicycles, you can access the trail from a parking area on route 362 north of Leonard Harrison near the junction with route 6. Easy to see the parking location with the satellite view in Google Maps.
  • Thanks very much for the responses - 15 it is! Then we'll cut over to 287 below Wellsboro. I'm having to program each step into our GPS...

We are planning on staying at Leonard Harrison SP. And yes - we will definitely do the Turkey Path. We did this before - many years ago when the kids were still with us - and we're looking forward to doing it again. :)
  • If you visit Leonard Harrison SP do the hike down to the river. Was there a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it.
  • 15 out of Williamsport for sure!!

Where are you staying? When you get to Morris, there is a nice CG called Twin Streams right there.
  • I just came up 287 from Williamsport and it's a beautiful drive in a sports car but I don't think I would take my 40' motorhome that way.
The road has many curves and some up and down "hills" that will slow you down quite a bit if you're in a hurry.

If you take 15 get off at the Liberty exit and turn left on 414. It will take you down into Morris and then take 287 for 12 miles to Wellsboro. There are curves and hills on that road too but it's not nearly as long as staying on 287.

I think that 15 is the better choice unless you want to take your time and enjoy "Penns Woods".
