I have driven 244, but not towing. But I would not hesitate to pull the 5er up it. Narrow yes, but overall a pretty good road as I remember it. And the climb is not too much since you are starting out a higher elevation than you would from Alamogordo.
And like you, I would not tow up US 82 from Alamogordo.
