You should have travel medical insurance, especially for Canada. I have heard of people not getting it for Mexico as some of the costs can be much lower, we have always had it though on our trips there.
Weapons are a problem into both countries. I'm not sure if there are any exceptions into Mexico, but into Canada it is possible to take rifles & shotguns with the correct documentation and reasons given at the border.
You should also check customs regulations for foodstuffs. We've had steaks taken from us at the Mexican border and fruits taken from us when entering the US.
