RV on a ship

My ex-wife's uncle told us about driving his RV to Alaska about 15 years ago. They decided to come back on a ship and were able to set their RV up on the deck of the ship or barge and live in it during the trip. Has anyone else heard of this or am I "misremembering" it?
  • Quite a number of cargo ships run between Seattle and Alaska. And they do ship cars and RV's. I could not say for sure, but it does seem plausible that you may be able to find a line that would allow you put it on the deck, and allow you to live in it.

Going to be cheaper southbound than northbound, as less demand from AK to Sea than the reverse

I mentioned maybe shipping the RV to Alaska a couple of weeks ago when someone was asking about driving to Anchorage AK. To get to Anchorage via highway requires some SW driving (back tracking) the way the only overland routes go...

One comment was it would cost a "bunch of money" to ship the RV to Anchorage...

I know some of our DOD groups that went to CLEAR AIR FORCE STATION, ALASKA for required inspections in my working years had to take their own GOVT own vehicles with them. This is located in about the center of Alaska near Anderson,AK.

  • Drive one way and ferry the other is very common. Sadly the RV is below decks and cannot be accessed in transit. Alaskain marine highway is what its called
