There is a sweet county RV park near Paterson, Wa called Crow Butte, Its on a small island in the Columbia River. Pretty popular so that time of year I would get reservations. If that doesn't work, there are a lot of nice state parks on both sides of the Columbia River that you might enjoy. If you haven't been there before make time to stop at Multnomah Falls and Bonneville Dam. If you turn off I 84 on I 205 South you can miss the Portland Traffic. Personally it would be my preference over 97
Also I would take Hwy 38 to the coast. Its a pretty drives that follows a river so there are no mountain grades to be concerned with. You can pick it up just after Cottage Grove on I5
