We live in California 7 months a year, and spend the rest of the time in Mexico, traveling around.
The roads in California are an embarrassment. We have just as many issues with the road quality in California as we do in Mexico, often more. If we are driving our classic VW, we suffer WAY more in California than we do in the moho in Mexico!
