RV title or registration

In the past we have all ways used our RV title for entry to Mexico. Can we use vehicle registration instead of the title?

In Nova Scotia we have a vehicle registration that we carry in the vehicle but we are also issued a Certificate of Registration that is to be kept in a safe place. These are issued for all plated vehicles be it a car, truck, rv,boat or utility trailer. We used to take this with us but the last few crossings we did not and just used our vehicle registration. Something tells me we will be taking both this year ;)

  • Interesting. British Columbia, and I believe it is true of all Canadian Provinces and Territories, doesn't have titles for motor vehicles or trailers. Just the registration document which comes from a printer. Hard to tell original from copy.

We'll see what happens this year.
  • One has to wonder why they are being so strict. The TIP program has been around for a long time. Maybe more than 15 years. Is it retaliation? Personally I would not blame Mexico if that is correct. In the past when these problems arose it was due to lobbying by the Auto Dealer Association. There are plenty of rules they are not enforcing. For awhile residents who were importing vehicles permanently needed a current smog test. The same problem occurred for anyone requiring a pass to enter the CDMX area that requires odd or even plates. As has been stated Aduaneros have the right to refuse entry for any reason. A friends had 12 bags of used clothing to donate. He was told they must be fumigated before allowed entry. Of course the Aduanero said you could just leave them at the border. My neighbor had 3 green treated poles to construct a lean to. They sent him to some place where spray was applied.

Aduana agents at various US-Mexico border crossings are shifting their stance on whether the US state registration paper is sufficient to get a Temporary Import Permit for US-plated vehicles. In the past, US state registration paperwork was sufficient, but now many Aduana agents are also requiring that we submit a copy of the vehicle’s title. … Most recently, the Nuevo Laredo & Columbia Bridge Aduana agents have been refusing to issue TIPs with US starte registration documents, unless the vehicle owner also supplies a copy of the vehicle title.

Further, the fine attorney Lic. Spencer McMullen explains some additional details about additional problems that can occur if you do get your TIP with just registration paperwork: …. ” The HUGE issue is that while you can technically get a TIP with the vehicle registration, without the title your car will sit in impound if towed due to improper parking or accident. ”

An additional insight to handling the TIP process well:
“… Financed cars should get a US notary certified copy (of the title) with apostille to prepare for this eventuality. ”

So, as Aduana~SAT policies continue to evolve, we can save ourselves some hassles & headaches by following the latest guidance from good experts.

  • Be prepared for continuing changes entering and exiting Mexico. All ways is no more.
  • Vehicle registration has always been fine.
Get your permit on line-easier, faster, same price, no lines.
  • I'll be darned I was asked for proof of ownership at the Banjercito window in 2010 Rather than create a fuss, I dug out a laser color copy of the ownership certificate and showed it to her. She replied "this is not original". But! That convinced her to ask someone else. After 15 minutes she slid the xerox back, used the registration to enter data into the computer. The place was Sonoyta, east of town. I might add she was ready to move me aside and take the next person in line. I was the only extraneous under the sombra and line extending up the steps.
  • If you registration is also your title as is the case in British columbia, its Ok.
  • Last year, the Mexican agents wanted to see the registration for both the motorhome and the towed vehicle.

This year, who knows what will be needed
