IMHO, for this to be FUN, and Memorable you need a much better PLAN.
Look this over as a similar trip just well planed and done year after year.
I'm one who has been traveling back and forth across the US all my life and the key to successful excursions is to have a good Plan. Does not mean you are/it is, set in stone, but that you know what you want to do and plan around it.
If I were you I'd work away from the Coast to Coast drive and focus on the sights in the Middle - Mt Rushmore - Glacier - Yellowstone - Tetons and Colorado. Next trip run to Cali and do the coast and the Nation parks there. 28 days will fly by.
Think about it - with a solid Plan you will never forget it, especially with the Kids.
