Rv'ing in Eastern Mexico

This summer we are thinking of taking our 30ft 5ver into Mexico. One park we are looking at is Bahia Escondida Hotel & RV Park Resort - http://www.ontheroadin.com/Mexico%20Interior%202011/Bahia%20Escondida%20Hotel.htm.
We don't really know anything about the area. We know there is a Natl Park. I just want to be sure it's safe traveling in this area and if we are coming from the Houston area where the best place to cross would be. Any info would be great!!!! Thanks
BTW, any other suggestions would be helpful.

  • We crossed at Laredo (The Columbia Bridge crossing, in November no problems. Get there early and beat the truck traffic.

Here is a link to our blog. You will just need to scroll down to the bottom to find our crossing info.

    Good luck and enjoy Mexico
  • If you make a stop over in Mission Tx in one of the RV parks and cross at the new bridge of Anzalduas, from the bridge to the highway is an easy strech and you avoid going through Reynosa.

From the bridge to highway 40D toll road it is an easy strech on highway 2 to the 40 and then it splits into 40(libre) and 40D(cuota), the D stands for toll roads.

You will have plenty of time to reach the camp ground and avoid travelling at night, Houston to Monterrey is aprox 505 miles, Mission to Monterrey is about 150 Miles, Houston to Mission is about 360 miles.

  • You asked about safety. Some people consider the border crossing areas a bit dicey. I hope people chime in with their personal experiences. We have had guests as recently as this week in their new Class A that said their crossing and ride down to Monterrey was a pleasure. We have been using the libres to McAllen and Laredo.

That said, it is a personal choice and you choose the criteria. Some people like to "beat feet" across the border.
  • " Chipinque is one of many national parks and is located in the city of Monterrey."

It's beautiful there! The first time we ventured past the border towns we stayed in Monterrey and drove out to the park - which isn't very far at all from the city. Outstanding scenery.
  • It's next door to my house which is 30kms south of Monterrey. It is a time share and used to have a KOA campground. The campground is still there next to the water, with 15 amp service. Your fiver will fit beautifully.

There are lots of things to do here as well as in Monterrey. Monterrey has a very nice riverwalk with boat rides similar but nicer than San Antonio, Tx.

Chipinque is one of many national parks and is located in the city of Monterrey. The views and hiking are spectacular but there is no camping other than tens allowed.

In Santiago (Bahia Escondida), there are mountains, waterfalls, hiking, boating, and many ecotourist activities.

Unfortunately, we won't be home this summer as we are head to a trip around the western U.S. and across Canada for five months.
