RVing into Bahia LA

Hi all, our family is planning to ride to Bahia, Mexico by next month and it would be our first ride into Mexico. I believe we need to insure the RV and what else we have to take care of? My family consists of two adults and 2 teens. We've planned to take our Mexican RV insurance through online site and I guess we would be needing our passports? What else should we be caring? Can anyone help me list out things we should be taking care of?

How about those 20+ elementary school kids in Connecticut - or the 33 students and Virginia Tech - or the shootup in the Aurora, CO movie theater? Not to mention the 38,000 carjackings in the US each year? This list could go on and on on either side of either border. Don't want to go? Don't go! • Hello from BAH-HAH!
Yesterday on the desolate Vizcaino - Bahia Tortugas road I saw a car off onto the shoulder with a Mexican man (senior) standing alongside.

A Mexican car that had passed me awhile back whizzed by him doing 80. Full of young people. I stopped and gave the man a 30 mile ride to a gas station.

He was my age. His car was newer than mine and he had forgotten his wife had used the car and took off on a 75 mile journey without checking the gas gauge first.

I've only traveled, worked and retired here for 51 years. I drive through Sinaloa have a family in tierra caliente Michoacan, and today drive the full length of Tijuana.

Try this on for size: The last people in the world I would ever want to meet down here would be those whom say "I would never go there". What a perfect way to screw up an otherwise perfectly nice day.

I can peruse the internet and scare myself to death with phantom, ailments, spontaneously combustion, food additives, runaway big rig accidents, the spectre of nuclear war wth Vladamir Puta, Seven foot cops with truncheons in LA, bad doctors, oh the list is endless.

    But I don't

I've got better things to do. Sorry.

But a couple dozen years ago I had an F4 tornado chase me, 20-miles east of Topeka. It wasn't funny. Seven people died according to the motel desk clerk. The tornado was within three miles southwest of me. People were honking their horn and flashing their lights. Too much rain could not speed. Wonderful feeling a person gets from doing that. Helpless. I'll travel there again if the route takes me.
  • Here we go again. I wish I had the rights to that news story. Could make a fortune every time it is recycled. Funny how it changes every time it is posted Whistle britches: I did not see where anyone asked for your opinion on anything. Your post has nothing to do with the subject at hand and is inaccurate.

  • Did you see the news story about the seven college kids that got shot in Panama City Florida? You couldn't pay me to go there.
  • Did you ever see the Dateline NBC show about the family who went into the Baha to ride their four wheelers? On their way back with their toyhauler, they were stopped by the Policea and ordered out of their truck and taken up to a ditch and made to lie down (they thought they were going to get shot). After waiting about two hours, they finally walked to a house in thed distance and they helped them get back to the border. They were only about 3 miles from the border when this happened. They never did get their truck, toyhauler or four wheelers back. Scared the bejesus out of them. You couldn't pay me to go over there.
  • If you are insured in the US with Progressive check your policy. Their US policies cover vehicles travelling in Mexico for collision, fire, theft and comprehensive. You would only need to buy Mexican liability insurance which is considerably less expensive
  • For vehicle insurance we have always used (13 years) Lewis and Lewis and can recommend them. we had a problem with a claim a year ago and Lewis and Lewis (Insurance Brokers) were very helpful in dealing with the adjuster.

I would also highly recommend the Churchs' Baha book We are experienced Mexico RVers and wouldn't think of going down without their Mexico Camping book.

Take copies of your marriage certificate. In the case of emergency you must to be able to prove that each of you have the right to look after the other.

Note that should you go over to mainland Mexico you will need different insurance and vehicle import permits.

    Have a great trip.
