I'd be surprised if the Keys don't vanish....

We fell in love with the Keys last year during a visit to Marathon. I don't see how anything could be left after Irma passes but then I'm a desert dweller and don't know 'caines.

I have a house in Big Pine, right next to the deer and bird refuge. It's on the open water of Pine channel. I'm not there. I was watching my security cameras on my phone and saw that a 35' tree was down. This was at 6pm yesterday. The storm had hardly got started. I am no longer getting cameras on my phone. 120 mph wind was reported at the Big Pine refuge.

Hurricane Mathew devastated two state parks along the coast of SC last year and it was not nearly as strong as this one. Hope the damage is not as bad as some think it might be. It ain't gonna be pretty.

Hurricane Andrew crossed the Keys with 130 MPH winds in 1992. The Keys will survive Irma as well. Not all of the buildings and trees of course, but the Key aren't going anywhere.

x2. The Keys have been there for centuries.They are not going anywhere. Bridges repaired. Homes and businesses repaired,yes.

We had reservations for a great October trip this year: all four of the Keys state parks, and for Turtle Beach on Siesta Key in Sarasota.

I have a feeling Irma cancelled the trip.

Florida and the Residents of the Keys are a hardy bunch, I think the Over Seas Highway will be open within days and the keys will be headed back to normal very soon.
October is a long time from now in Key's recovery time.

In 2005 we drove down to Key West from Ft.Lauderdale less than a week after Wilma. While there were large piles of debris stacked along the way almost all business were open, and the same for Key West.

I think if I was NCwriter, I would leave my plans alone for now but would be making other plans and reservations elsewhere in the meantime, just in case. I would bet State Park cleanup / reopening and other recreational amenities are low on the State of Florida's pecking order.

That's what we did, we didn't cancel our Myrtle Beach/Anastasia State park plans yet, but also made reservations at Gulf State Park in Alabama just in case.
