S. Calif to Portland

Going to drive up 101 to Portland Area. First stop - Reagan Library...then onto Hwy 101. Any areas I should avoid driving 38' MH with toad. San Francisco area and Sacramento? Love seeing the ocean and since Hwy 1 is not an option...believe should be a nice choice. Thanks to all ahead of time for any comments.

  • Don't forget the Nixon Library if you are in the Yorba Linda area. Not the favorite president but the history is worth the stop. The Regan Library is great and I would not miss that one again. The Nixon library brought home some history for those of us in the Vietnam era and of course Watergate.
  • Your post contradicts itself. You mention San Francisco and Sacramento. Sac is on I-5 or I-80, not 101. You said from Semi Valley your heading up 101. Are you planning on switching over at some point from 101 to I-80 or I-5, or all the way on 101 to the Colombia River?
  • Sounds like you're going to take CA 99 up thru the Sacramento area, if so, take CA 20 over to Clear Lake and join US 101, stay on it all the way up thru Oregon. Might be windy and rainy, but you won't have to worry about any snow. SP's along the Oregon coast are great, one of our favorites is Harris Beach at Brookings. Oh, also remember that gasoline/diesel is quite a bit cheaper in OR than in CA, so try to stretch out the fuel as much as you can.
  • If your going thru Sacramento you might really enjoy the train museum in old town. We are currently at vineyard RV park in Vacaville. Very nice, just off the 80. Petaluma KOA just across the golden gate is also a lovely park. Enjoy
  • Sacramento won't be too bad at all. If you hit it midday, even better. I would cruise right through and just plan to stop further north. Opt to take I-5, not SR99, whenever traveling through Central/Northern CA. Hwy99 is bumpy, congested, and fairly narrow in places.

You can have your cake and eat it too. Disconnect and drive to the ocean. However, your 38 foot motorhome is not prohibited on SR 1, the Pacific Coast Highway. You are two feet short of the prohibited limit.
  • No problems except lots of rain and probably wind. If you have not done it, be sure to visit the Redwoods. Brookings harbor, any of the Oregon state parks, Winchester bay RV park offers great views and the dunes are close by.
