Sacramento, CA to Forest, VA Routing

Hello all. . .Wife & I will be driving our TOAD mid October to pick up our new-to-us used Class A RV; we will be hoping to make the drive in short order & the returning a bit more slowly in the new rig. . .Visual sights without much stopping headed East is what we are looking for Hwy 50 - 70 - 64?. . .Headed back to the Left Coast, a little more slowly, we are thinking on Hwy 5 - 40 - 84?. . . IF you have experience we would appreciate your thoughts. . . Don't want to stay on the road too long as will want to probably fix the RV up to our likings & then the Holidaze will be here. . .Thanks in advance. . .!!!! We have a small TOAD & we are gonna load it up with "stuff" we feel will be essential for the return trip & will stay in the RV; on the way to VA, motels will be it for the night. . .
  • Busskipper I think we got what we wanted, and, if the unit is as it appears to be ( Ima hopin' ) I think we got a good price. Really super nice private party was gonna sell earlier this year & after using rig 2 times this summer decided it was time to let go; we were just about to call them up when an eMail came in!!!!! So, I am thinking & hoping we got what we wanted for a good price from good folks. . .Time will tell. . .It all worked out. . .I think. . .
  • From Forest I'd suggest US 460 to I81 then south. To Forest I64 to I81 south to US501 should be pretty in mid October but don't tow this route.

Hopefully the “Toad” is a good driver – That will be a drive but as you indicate point “A” to “B” so the interstates are the best option – avoid the rush hour traffic in the cities and plan/call ahead to find a motel when driving – we moved out and back to Colorado a few years back (Long story – 7 trips in 4 months) and it is so much easier to drive the Coach and find a place to stay than getting a room, so you need to call ahead around 2 or so to be sure you can get a room where you will be stopping.

Headed back to the Left Coast, a little more slowly, we are thinking on Hwy 5 - 40 - 84?. . .

This part will be more fun –I’d start out by heading down the Blue Ridge Parkway – leaves should be at a once in a lifetime colors so you can cross it off your Bucket List. And the drive on I-40 through Tennessee and Arkansas will be perfect also. This time of year is perfect if you are into exploring a little not too hot ant some of the best weather of the year. Lots of interesting History to explore and with all the Lakes fun places to stay in the Coach.

IF you have experience we would appreciate your thoughts. . .

I-40 and Oklahoma are historically not one of my routes – it only took once to bounce my fillings out and I have sworn to never drive it again…… but others have loved it.

    Because you are going to need to head back up to Rt 50 to get back home look at heading up in Arizonia I would put these places into my GPS;

Window Rock – Capital of the Navajo/Navaho nation
Chinle – Canyon de Chelly NM
    Monument Valley
    Mexican Hat
    Moab – Arches - Canyonlands – Rt 128
    Goblins, SP

    .Thanks in advance. . .!!!!

Must have been a “Heck of a deal” California to Virginia…………….

    BOL,
  • I like the US highways but they are slower.... they go through towns. Their surface seem to be smoother than the interstates.

I-40 was in very good shape from NM through TN this past May... except about 50 miles in the west Memphis, Arkansaw area and they were working on it.

US50 goes from sacremento to Anapolis, MD.... through Wash DC... a fun trip

Traffic wasn't bad on either road

    Enjoy your trip
  • I-70 east.... US-50 west

watch the weather.... drop all the way to I-40 west if you have too
