Sacramento to Willits, Ca.

I am planning on traveling during the week Wed about 10 a.m. June 25 from Sacramento to (Kate Wolf Music Festivle in Laytonville 20 mi north of Willits)Willits, Ca. See below 35' Class A. Not sure if I'll bring my toad.
I've heard good/bad about Hwy 20 from Williams to Willits, and I've heard going down I-80 then over to Hwy 101 & up to Willits is lots of traffic.
I haven't driven either route in prob 40 years.
Wondering which route is good for my 35' RV length.
About how long it will take
What recommended RV parks (35' RV) 30-35 miles from Laytonville.
(I checked rvparkreviews and get mixed reviews from online searches)
I know it's the weekend before 4th of July so on Monday 29th gotta head home. Would love go up to Ave of Giants but seems a no go).

Appreciate the help.

Highway 20 is a good route.

    X-2
Been driving it every Oct for about 12 years. They had done a lot of upgrade in the last few years.
It's only about 70 miles from Williams to Willits.
Be sure to stop at Granziles in Williams.
    Great for Breakfast or lunch.
Another good stop during the weeks if Ruminano Cheese in Williows.
You pay wholesale for some great cheese.

  • I have answered this question so many times I saved the response so I can copy and paste. This route is from a life time of experience as a native to the area. Getting to Willits is a breeze. Trucks of all sizes travel the route every day. Getting from Willits to Ft Bragg is a slow winding process if you want to go that far West but well worth it. You won't go that way to Leggett though.

Enjoy the trip and keep an eye out for the Elk Herd along the 20 route.

Take Highway 20 West out of Williams. 37.1 miles.

Watch for Highway 53 as you drop down a hill after a fairly long climb. Easy climb and multiple lanes.
Turn what would be South onto 53. You will go about 8 miles. Look for the sign to Highway 29 which leads to Kelseyville. This is a nice road and will become freeway in a few miles. Eventually you are back to two lane for a short distance and will come to a stop sign. You are back to Highway 20 again. This leg is about 30 miles. Turn left and enjoy the beautiful drive right to 101

This route will bypass the two lane twisting and winding on the North side of Clear lake. If you want a good view of the lake go ahead and stay on 20 all the way to 101.
  • I would suggest hwy 20 from Williams to Willits. It is about 95-100 miles, probably take about 2-3 hours, depending on traffic. The traffic can get a little heavy around the lake in the summer time but nothing like you will encounter going down 80 and taking one of the several routes over to 101.

Highway 20 in general is a fine route you will have no problem with your motor home towing or not. Just expect lots of tourist traffic through the towns.
  • Last time I was on it hwy 20 was fine most of the way. There was some construction but that should be long finished. Be sure to take the cutoff around the south side of the lake to avoid some narrow areas and congestion.
